So I’m interviewing for a new job after a little over 1.5 years at my current role. This is my first job out of college, so I’ve never job searched/interviewed while working in a job that didn’t have a fixed end point. I have a great job that I was initially planning on staying in until the end of the year, but at the end of 2020 a big chunk of my team left and I’m incredibly burnt out by the increased workload.
I’m anticipating the question to come up in the upcoming interviews I have scheduled.
My honest (professional) response would be: “While I am passionate about the work I do and very appreciative of the experience I’ve gained in this role, there have been some departures from my department that have made it very difficult to continue my work at X company.”
I’m worried that this will make me seem like someone who won’t weather tough times with a company and is flighty (especially since I haven’t been in this position long). Or that I am someone who chooses loyalty to people over company. Honestly, both of these assumptions aren’t necessarily false, but no company wants to hear that.
Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I know how the thinnest of red flags can bar candidates from further consideration. I’d just appreciate any advice or perspective on how this answer would come off to a recruiter/hiring manager.
Many thanks!
