Hey Yall,
I'm currently a junior in college and have recently switched career paths from Marketing to Finance. I attend a pretty prestigious business school and am hoping to leverage my degree and concentration to pursue a career in either corporate finance or investment management. My GPA is relatively solid (3.5) and I consider myself to be a pretty well-rounded individual. Internship hunting has been pretty tough this past year as I was way too busy with academics to do much during the fall. I had applied to a couple financial/accounting internships but hadn't heard back so I assume I wasn't picked as a candidate.
I've been able to secure a summer internship for the past two summers and have a relatively strong resume, but I'm kind of worried about my prospects for the summer as it's already March and nothing seems to be coming to fruition. I've definitely been putting in more work this semester and may have some options on the table but nothing concrete yet. I believe I have a moderate level of competency in the finance and accounting field due to the coursework I've been taking and the transferability of the skills I have from my previous marketing internships.
Recently, I've been contacted by a regional hiring representative for my previous employer last summer. I figured that I'd be a good fit for them eventually as they are a large multinational financial services corporation, but the problem is the only positions they have available for me are in completely different fields. I really have no desire to pursue a long-term career in these fields but the fact that its a concrete offer is tempting me to accept. In addition, another thing I've considered is that if I continue to intern with them, I could hopefully try and internally pivot to finance once I (hopefully) get a full-time offer after this summer. I've heard a lot about this company offering full-time positions to people who've interned with them multiple times, but its not guaranteed. It would be a form of employment to build my resume and like I said before, it's a little late in the game for this summer. On the other hand though, I'm so tired of marketing internships.
I know taking this offer would do virtually nothing to help me advance my career path in finance as I don't have much of a track record with it as is, but I also don't want to go without a job or something this summer in this competitive-ass environment. I really want some solid experience in finance for the sake of my future. Should I pass it up and work twice as hard to secure a finance/analyst internship? Or should I take this offer and try to work my way towards the finance industry once I get "in"? Any advice is appreciated.
TL;DR: I want to pursue a career in finance but don't have an internship lined up for the summer yet. Job prospects are far and few between at this time and I don't want to go without experience this summer, especially with the competition I face in my business school. I got an offer recently for an internship completely outside my desired line of work and am conflicted as to whether I should pass up this offer and work twice as hard to secure a finance internship or whether I should take it and try to work my way into finance in the multinational finance corporation I would be interning with - even though I currently have no previous finance experience and this wouldn't give me that.
