Sent counter offer now I'm not hearing back

So I got the job offer that I've been wanting on Monday. The salary was a little less than I was hoping for, so I asked for an 8% increase. I emailed them my counter offer Tuesday and they replied the next day telling me they would look into it and get back to me by Thursday. I didn't hear anything Thursday so this evening I called and left a voicemail checking up but I still haven't heard anything. Do you think I screwed up this job opportunity by asking for more? It was a fair salary and within the median range for the area, but I just figured a didn't hurt to ask. I would have been happy with the original offer.
