Advice for job application after being fired for theft? “Reason for leaving”

So my first job was with a big brand retail company when I was a senior in high school. Loved it so much and did so well I got a promotion 2 years in to a keyholder position.

Unfortunately when I was promoted we had received a new store manager who was a racist and a compulsive liar and made many of our staff quit due to feeling uncomfortable/ mistreated in the workplace, along with supplying alcohol to our (minor) associates outside of work and inviting them to the bars with her. After several anonymous reports were made to HR for breaking fraternization rules, discrimination, etc., no action had been taken on her.

Of course, I had no respect for my store manager for her actions or the company for not caring, and one day my dumbass 20 year old self decided I didn’t care either and took unclaimed merchandise credit cards that still had cash balances out of the trash and used them to buy clothes with. I knew it was against the rules, but if my store manager could get away with everything she did and still have a job I assumed the company’s rules were really not enforced.

About 6 months go by before AP tracked down the purchases to my home address and I was fired for theft. No charges were filed against me, however.

Now I am finally trying to get back into the workforce, but I’m anxious about what to list on job applications. I’d like a sales lead position because that’s what I’m qualified for and it guarantees the hours I need to cover my bills.

My first option is to be fully transparent and list my job experience on the application and say I left my employer due to termination. I can explain in the interview the situation and admit that it was a foolish mistake and I greatly learned my lesson and hope they appreciate my honesty. My concern is that them seeing “TERMINATION” on my application is going to make me look undesirable and they won’t even WANT an interview with me.

My second option is to list my reason for leaving as “looking for a new environment/experience”. I had wanted to quit my job anyways due to the unhealthy environment my store manager created and there was not a lot of potential for growth there. My only concern with this is if this employer contacts my previous owner for a reference and my old store manager tells them what really happened. I know this is technically illegal (atleast in MA), but my SM thrives on drama so I wouldn’t put something like that past her. I also know you can be fired for “lying” on an application, so there’s that.

My last option is to just not list my past experience on the job application at all. That way there is no need to worry about having to confess the truth or to beat around the bush with a white lie. My only issue with this is that my 4 years of retail experience is really desirable for the position I want, so not listing it would potentially only offer me a position I am overqualified for while underpaid and with not enough hours.

I am looking for the best advice for my situation. What should I do?
