My university offers Software Engineering and Computer Science as separate majors where SE seems to focus on more industry and less algo. I wanted to know if there was a difference in job prospects for either since they are very similar. Many companies do not directly state that they are looking for one or the other. Does this mean that I am eligible for either job? Furthermore, would taking electives that are suited towards CS majors as an SE major allow me to be eligible for those careers that are dominated by CS majors? I want to have the most flexibility in my job search and I heard that CS can go anywhere while SE goes into less diverse/more specific positions. Many universities do not even offer an SE major.
I go to RIT for reference. They take the same/similar courses for years 1 and 2. But in year three and four they branch somewhat. SE focuses on industry tech while CS focuses on CS theory and algorithms to do things.
I would appreciate answers from Industry Vets, hiring managers, or anybody with familiarity.
