Interviewer led me on and then rejected me. Not sure if it was a mistake?

I had an initial phone interview that I thought went really well. I emailed the interviewer thanking her for her time, briefly restating my interests and qualifications for the position, and telling her I hoped to hear from her soon about possible next steps. The interviewer actually responded to the email saying that she would get in touch soon with next steps. This was unusual to me as a thank you email is usually just an etiquette thing and I have never received a response from one before, even from hiring managers that I ended up getting the position with. This heavily insinuated to me that I would be moving forward in the interview process. A week passes and I begin to fear the worse and then the automated rejection email came the next day.

This was really unexpected and I can't reason out why she would respond and lead me on? I understand if it was in person to get me out of her hair but this was an email. I also understand if it was just one opening and she found someone even better unexpectedly but this was a new grad position with multiple spots (we had talked about that when discussing location).

Part of me wants to email her asking if it was a mistake but I have no idea how to do that without sounding crazy. This actually happened to me twice before with different companies but I got an email within two hours saying it was a mistake both times. I let the weekend and one business day pass just in case it was a mistake but I have received no update. Not sure what to do moving forward.
