I’m trying to determine which references to use for applications and I would greatly appreciate some advice!

I’m currently in the process of applying for some field research technician positions for the summer and most of the positions request three references up front. I’m trying to decide who to use for my third reference. I interned at a wildlife rehabilitation center for a semester and I feel that this is my most relevant experience. However, this experience was a year ago and I didn’t really work with the center’s director very closely. Would it be uncool to ask her to be a reference because we didn’t have much face to face interaction? I thought it might be good to include someone who could verify that I interned there but I really didn’t know her super well. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
