I don’t really know what my role at work is now
As the title says, I’m unsure of my new role at my job. I did customer support for two years with this company and am now somewhat of a social media admin. I say somewhat because the new program I’m working on with my boss is in beta and they’ll evaluate me when the beta ends and see if they want to keep me on.
We’ve finished our first month of the program. My boss and I had a meeting and he said things that confused me and I need help with.
One thing he said was that I need to be looking for opportunities to show my value to the company. Like come up with a solution for a problem that may arise in the future or think of an idea my boss wouldn’t have thought of. But I don’t know how to do that! This has been my longest job and I’m just turning 21. I was kind of thrown into the deep end from customer support into this project. Also my boss has at least 15 years of experience on me.
He also said that right now I’m replaceable and I need to be indispensable.
Another thing he said is that he can’t be my task giver. I know he’s busy but he also hasn’t given me a clear, detailed explanation of my position verbally or in writing so I just do what I think I’m supposed to do. And that seems like a recipe for disaster.
How should I approach my boss about what I should be doing? And how do I seize opportunities? TIA
