Hi all,
I'm hoping for some advice / guidance on how to change careers after being stuck in retail / customer service for almost 20 years.
My situation is that I'm 35, at 16 due to constant bullying through my whole school life I couldn't face the thought of going through it all again at college so I left at 16 into full time work. Obvsiously at 16 I just took what work I could get, ended up in retail. Because of the former issue I had developed quite bad depression and anxeity, as well as confidence issues, so I just continued getting by in retail, didn't really have the motivation to think about a career as just the day to day was mentally tough.
Over the last few years I've really been trying to get myself on track though, I started an online degree (psychology) which I'm due to finish this summer. I did a workaway volunteer position teaching in Japan for a few months. I've taught myself C#, basics of Unity3D, Blender, imaging software and video editing, as well as a few other bits (albeit mainly as a hobby). My mental health issues are still there, but thankfully I now have good friends who are helping through them.
A lot of the retail jobs I've been in have actually had me doing a lot of admin, analysis, reports, auditing, health & safety reports, stock control, and logistics. But the problem is no matter how I try to word or tailor transferrable skills, or self development, in a cover letter or my CV, it seems employers are just seeing 20 years of retail and instantly dismissing my application. I'm just not getting a look for interviews at all. Even if I look at junior or trainiee positions in other fields I just keep seeing 'x years of experience in x field required' or 'at least 1 year working on x project type'.
I know realistically my options are going to be limied, I'm never going to get a programming job with my skill level for example. But I can't even seem to get considered for general office admin or junior/assistant level research, marketing, digital QA roles. And to be fair when looking at job listings and seeing things like "100 applicants" for the role, I can understand why, chances are 90 of them probably are fresh graduates or have experience in that field. So why would an employer bother looking at my application?
Any advice would be really appreciated because I'm really struggling and just don't know what to do anymore. I've even tried contacting some companies speculatively to ask about roles, but rarely even get a response.
