Dealing with criticism at work

This might sound ridiculous, but I'm having a lot of anxiety about returning to work because of some work struggles/criticism I've experienced in the past.

More specifically, I had a supervisor a couple years ago who was pretty nice at first, but gradually became more hostile and annoyed with me. He would speak to me in an extremely stern manner if I had a question and would get angry about fairly minuscule things. Once he legit walked up to my desk and gestured choking me because he thought I made mistake (turns out he misinterpreted the info). I could just tell by his general attitude that he was not impressed, which gave me a lot of anxiety and most likely worsened my performance. One day he gave me a huge lecture saying that I was unprofessional, not hard working and it was time for me to "stop acting like a child." I'll admit that I was experiencing a lot of personal problems at the time and it's possible the job just wasn't the right fit for my personality (lots of multi-tasking and dealing with customers), but that interaction was a huge blow to my self-esteem and I genuinely feel a sense of incompetence to this day.

I've had better experiences since then and I've never been fired from a job so I would like to think that I'm somewhat functional, but I still doubt myself all the time. Any advice for the future?
