Asking multiple people to be references and only picking some?

I am applying to teaching jobs soon and I am wondering if it is a bad idea to start asking people to be references for me and to pick only a couple if I have too many later on. I do not know if I will get “better” references later so in the case that I do, is it wrong to not use those who I think will not support my application as much? What does everyone think?
