This might be a long one so I apologise!
TLDR: Worked for a company for 4 years, no progression barely a pay bump. Found another job, they counter-offered with a career path, substantial increase (but not more). Very anxious making the wrong decision since I'm scared of the unknown.
So I have been a system admin for the past 4 years at this company. It was a brand-new role they offered it to me based on my enthusiasm for IT (I was working in a different department at the time). After learning CCENT, CCNA and doing my regular day job of supporting the UK (and supporting another office in Europe) and doing regular office admin small jobs here and there (they didn't have anyone in the office to do so they thought it would be a good idea for me to do) I thought this was enough to earn at least £4k salary increase at the end of my performance review last year.
However, this was not the case. My line manager (in another country) first didn't know I was doing the extra office admin stuff. Furthermore he said my current salary (£28k) was suitable for someone in my skillset and he "couldn't find other sysadmin jobs in the UK that paid more than £35k".
This really drove me up the wall and thus when the pandemic started, I took this opportunity to job hunt and go through as many interviews as possible while "working from home". Did Azure AZ-900 exam and passed that. Built my own homelab too (the pandemic was a blessing in a way). Then last December, I was told that for my performance review I will be getting another £1.5k increase, pushing it to £29.5k. I asked for them to round it to £30k, I was asking for that since 2019 but they said no again. This made me job hunt HARDER than ever before.
I have finally found an opportunity which they said will pay me £40k. They liked me so much that they skipped second stage interview and wanted me from the 1st stage. I got on really well with the IT manager and we had a good laugh during the interview. When I told my current workplace I'm leaving they were deeply shocked and disappointed (no shit!).
They have now drawn for me a career plan and increased my pay to £36k (they don't know about the offer I got). They really want me to stay and although the roadmap looks really enticing I couldn't help but feel betrayed and hurt that it took me leaving for them to come up with something like this. They did apologise that there was no thought or indication given to my role in the business (I'm the only IT guy in the UK office)
Then a wave of doubt hit me about the new opportunity (will I be good enough? I didn't go through technical interviews with the manager, we discussed a lot about our hobbies of building home labs and learning about Azure and cloud computing and stuff). What if I don't pass probation? So much doubt filled my head that started when this counter-offer was given to me. I'm 95% sure of my decision, but I can't help but be scared of the unknown. I'm too comfortable in my workplace.
