I'm in need of some good advice. I graduated with a degree in urban planning moved to NYC but instead went into digital marketing since it pays well and is an in demand field. Unfortunately, my first job as social media marketing focused and while fairly enjoyable it was honestly something an unskilled intern could do and I let my skills stagnate for 4 years in that role while the industry evolved. After job hunting I and getting turned down for better paying roles I realized my skills were not up to par with the profession. It also wasn't something I wanted to pursue further for various reasons. I stumbled around around trying to figure out what to do next and how to pivot into something that did interest me... though due to my financial situation I had to move back home (I don't recommend working low salaried jobs and trying to survive in NYC) Burnt out I had to regroup and out of necessity got a retail job in an unfortunate toxic environment that nearly ruined my professional confidence- a position looking back I should have never applied to in the first place and missed a couple of red flags during the interview.
I left that job in September and I've been hunting ever since. I've done simple digital marketing freelance projects while applying and battled with myself over switching into a career that is practical and in demand (UX/ UI, most STEM jobs, etc...) vs what I'm truly interested in but most likely pays less (creative fields, something related to architecture, interior design, etc...) GIS is also something I'm thinking of going into since it relates to my degree but that involves going back to school most likely. ..
Add in the pandemic, having a few interviews that didn't go anywhere, anxiety about making enough so I will never be in this situation again, the shame of being too old to be back at my parent's place and hearing about millions getting laid off and I'm feeling a bit lost and hopeless during this time about having a career and getting my act together. When the pandemic and economic situation improves in the (hopefully near future) I can only imagine a hiring manager seeing long my gap started before the pandemic and then having dozens of question why... along with an unrelated degree and a job history that seems unfocused.
I know I need a job to close that resume gap but applying to just any job might get me more stuck. Or even more lost since I'm at least 5 years behind my peers career wise who had great, well paid positions... before the pandemic at least.
I'm wondering how to wisely move forward so I can move back out and form a decent career...
