I work for a sanitation company in South East, and I drive my own truck. Not a big garbage truck, but a small Isuzu garbage truck. I was in a driveway getting a customer's trash. Apparently their puppy had gotten under my truck and I couldn't see it, so when I was backing out of the driveway I ran over it. I immediately stopped my truck and I saw that the sog was crushed. I wasn't thinking straight and I dont know why I did this, but I wrapped the dog up in a trash bag and threw it away without telling anybody.
Today I was brought into the office and I was suspended for 5 days for the event. I am thankful that I wasn't fired, but I am still really scared that I could lose it. I think the only reason I wasn't fired was because I've been working there for about 40 years now with no other incidents.
Anyways, what I'm wondering is, since I've already been punished are they still able to fire me, or if they do fire me am I able to bring it to court for my 5th amendment right?
