How do I work towards becoming an accountant with just an associate's degree?

I probably won't be able to move into my third year of college immediately after this semester because I'll be having to pay for it myself, and I really don't want to take out loans. I'm wondering if I can go ahead and start working, and go back to college later.

Is there any other way I can build my resume geared towards becoming an accountant, preferably while making an income? Any general advice? Thanks in advance.
