I got a job as a bachelor’s level mental health counselor in November. I spent $300 in pre-employment fees but have yet to make any money. Lack of communication is a huge issue too, but alas, the biggest reason I think I should quit my job.
I don’t feel competent enough to be providing counseling. My therapist said I’m not actually doing therapy, but providing basic life skills but honestly, I don’t feel knowledgeable enough to do that either. I’ve been providing emotional support for about a year now (got my bachelors in May of this year) but am finding that providing emotional support and teaching life skills are very different and I don’t have the skill set (yet) for this job.
I’ve decided to go to grad school for social work! I’ll start in the Spring if I get in, so one day I’ll be equipped. But it just feels like with all of this background work I’m doing trying to hurry up and learn skills in order to teach them before my sessions, 1) I’m not getting compensated appropriately (even once I actually get paid!) and 2) it shows my incompetence and the immediate need for me to stop seeing clients and resign.
