Need advice: How long would you continue to get slapped in the face by your company before you cut your losses and quit?
Background: This is my first job in this industry, but I have over 15 years experience in a completely unrelated industry (I'm almost 40). Both jobs are management - my new one in operations management. The skills required for both are similar. I started this new industry 2 years ago at the entry level, as I understood it to be the most expedient way to get in the door and make connections. I was quickly promoted a few times due to several unexpected departures in management, and I think the fact that I'm eager to learn, patient and resourceful, and an all-around hard worker - or at least I think I am - drove the decisions to promote me. My boss is a C-Suite executive.
Here's the issue: for starters, I had to go back to the negotiating table three times to land on my current salary because I was being lowballed every time. I'm still not paid what I'm worth or what my duties actually require, but it's what we finally agreed to. At the start of the pandemic, my employer was paying hazard pay to my team every month. I got to give them the good news on that, but was also informed after payments went out that I was excluded as I'm the leader of the team. I had to furlough several good employees during the pandemic. I also fired 6 people in an effort clean-up a failing department. Part of that clean-up also involved auditing budgets and spending habits, and I had to deliver bad news over and over again. I had to argue for a vacation because my requests continued to be denied (should be noted, in two years I had taken no vacation time). I finally took a vacation. When I got back I learned several things had happened in my absence that did no go reported - an accident and a fight - and had to deal with the wrath of HR upon my return. And just for funsies, my boss hardly ever responds to my emails giving my opinion after he specifically asked for it. And, what I think might be the final straw, I just finished having one-on-one meetings with every member of my team to tell them how much I appreciate them, despite most being complete incompetent clowns, and to give them an end-of-year bonus. But, as with the stimulus checks, I did not receive a bonus - after achieving excellent quarterly growth for my department and wading through a lot of bullshit along the way. That's it. No bonus for leading a team through a very tough year. That's the story of compensation issues.
The other problem is the circus of people who are also managers. My lateral team are a group of power-hungry people who are constantly in feuds and willing to sabotage each other to get what they want. Two people believe they are the boss, and they might be as far as I know, because the organization structure is super unclear. I am pretty good at not getting dragged into the feuds, although all of them try to be manipulative and get me to take sides. And these are some real stupid feuds. Think: power struggle over who is allowed to access whose data and reporting. And the worst of them all is the HR manager, who might be the rudest person I've ever met. They once advised me not to use the word "toxic environment" in any reports or disciplinary actions because they will be mandated to investigate it. They want to control every aspect of my team despite never having stepped foot inside my department and has never seen where and under what conditions my team works (just for kicks, my boss has also only ever visited the site 4 times since I've worked for the company). I have no trusted ally or friend at work, and it's really starting to get to me.
I don't know what to do about all of this (and it's just a summary!), but it's not okay, right? This is ridiculous and abusive? I don't know what my next steps should be - should I persevere and keep pushing, should I complain (but to whom? my boss is THE boss.), or should I just quit? Although, I don't know if quitting is even an option during these uncertain times (I know, I know. But they ARE uncertain.)
