I'm quitting my job after 6 months because of extremely unsanitary and unsafe conditions. How do I navigate explaining this experience on a resume?
For context, I live on the work site. It's an agricultural research center. I'm very proud of the work I've done during my short stay and could use the experience on my resume.
The major issue is the living conditions. We only have composting toilets in the living facility, but they're broken so we're told not to use them. They cannot be emptied properly, causing a build up of feces from previous coworkers, international interns, and guests. This has caused a massive fly and moth infestation that has persisted for years based on information from previous employees. We have an outhouse, but that is also broken, causing the bucket to fill with maggots. Because of this, we are told to pee outside (women) or in jars (men).
There is no bathroom at the worksite. Again, we are told to pee outside or take a shovel into the woods in case of emergency. I have found my dog eating from 3 improperly dug cat holes from people literally shitting around the worksite. I had to really fight to get a coworker fired for consistently shitting in the backyard, even during broad daylight.
I have lost 20 lbs due to illness directly correlated to the everyday exposure to human waste. I've had my period for 2 months straight because of the stress and I'm losing hair.
There is extensive water damage and black mold in my bedroom, which is a concern of mine since I have asthma. There is also a kissing bug infestation. The other living accommodations are moldy, rat and bug infested sheds and trailers.
I'm home with family right now having a life crisis. I just graduated college in May and was so excited for this opportunity. The only word I can use to describe how I feel right now is anguish. This is even a condensed list of what's wrong -- I wrote a 3 pg. report on all of the health hazards on the site.
I can't live like this for another day. I was going to just pack my shit and leave. My mom says I should give two weeks notice but I'm scared of my boss's reaction. He's nuts. He wants a 10 year to lifetime commitment from us which is not what I signed up for. I'm thoroughly freaked.
My main concerns are: how do I explain this on a resume? What if a potential employer wants to contact this job? Should I even list it as an experience? I am so lost on what to do.
