How do you get into sales with no previous sales experience? And am I cut out for it?

How do you get into sales with no previous sales specific experience?

I work in financial services and have been in departments where I implement what the sales team brings on board - so I've been one degree away from sales for a few years essentially.

I am a former teacher and have relationship and project management experience. I've worked mostly in financial services but have also worked for two smaller startups - one was pretty high tech. I am decent with excel, pay attention to detail, and love to problem solve and help others. I also am a board member for a local nonprofit.

I would not call myself "persuasive" or competitive (I want to do things the right way, not necessarily win over someone else) but I think I can do well in sales with more of a consultative and problem solving approach... I tend to be more of a listener until I feel comfortable and confident in what I am talking about, then I love to educate and share knowledge.

So how can I "sell" myself to a recruiter or hiring manager when I am not super pushy or over the top... and don't have sales experience on my resume? (I'm looking for specific examples of what to say in an interview or put on my resume to get the interview).

And the bigger question - can I make it in sales with a consultative/problem-solving approach versus being pushy and competitive?
