I work part time as a musician. Have been doing so for over 20 years. I had a Christmas gig coming up that we were supposed to record a video for.
Problem is I had surgery on my arm in October. I have healed well but I cannot perform an hours worth of music yet, certainly not at a professional level. Plus I am having the same surgery on my other arm in ten days. Therefore I have two bum arms.
Plus my partner just told me he had covid. Here in Ohio, the covid rate has skyrocketed and we have been strongly encouraged not to leave our homes except for emergency needs.
I have been telling my partner that I was not trending well (weeks ago) and that getting together to create the video tomorrow is not a good idea. He kept pushing forward anyway.
Today I made the executive decision to not do the video recording for obvious reasons. Now my partner has exploded and has shown no empathy. He just keeps saying “I’m screwed”. Then he said “I tried to get out of contract but they won’t let me, guess I gotta figure this out myself”
WTF! I have been doing gigs with my partner for 15 years and never had to cancel before. I have earned more respect then this. And no way do I want to “fulfill” a contract for $100 and risk my health for something I cannot even do.
Gigs can be rescheduled but pandemics and surgery recovery cannot. I did my best to recover in time but fell short. I am confident I made the right decision here. I realize I am part to blame for saying I could try to do the gig, but I told my partner several times that it depends on how I recover. Your thoughts?
