I work for a start up that pays me not enough a year to so case management. I took the position because they let me work from home full time.
In the beginning I start taking on more and more work. I was case management, content creator, copy editor, referral specialist (so if a business referred a client I handled it) all for the same pay. I was happy to do it, they seemed like nice people and the work was even at that point.
It's been a few months and I've noticed my colleagues cut ridiculous corners to get their work done. This results in issues further down the line. Rather than deal with it the company just shifts the workload...to me. We legitimately have a case manager now that has no caseload and he is working on 'special projects'.
It's now to the point that I have as many people on my caseload as the two other actual case managers - combined. I also have to fight to answer the phone because if a certain other case manager answers it she won't take a message and will instead work on your case. As you can imagine this is confusing for clients who then complain that they don't know who their case manager is. I have been reprimanded by email for allowing this to happen (we have direct phones, but sometimes a client will call the general line. Calls will also divert to the general line if I'm on the phone or miss the call. Oh and I have a voicemail, but this certain case manager won't let my calls go to voicemail).
So today my manager called me and said that my work wasn't moving fast enough and I needed to cut it down by ten days. I was shocked as I was already starting 30 min early just to get through my emails in the morning. I sat there fighting back tears and essentially acted like a little bitch. I was so...thrown.
It's take me about an hour, but I decided to put my foot down. I sent my manager an email with a breakdown of everyone's case load showing that I had twice as much of a caseload as everyone else so I wasn't writing, editing or taking on more clients until my numbers matched theirs.
I'm anxiously waiting a response, but I refuse to beat myself up or work myself into the ground just because they can't seem to train people to do the job and are then left with having to pass off more work to me.
EDIT: my manager called and informed me that she used to do my job and she was fine when she did.
The case manager that has less than half my workload can't possible handle more work because she's training a staff member.
My manager is going to stop assigning me OTHER PEOPLE'S NEW CASES (I had no idea she was doing this. I thought the new cases were allocated by the system) and we're now going to distribute them fairly.
I give up.
