Hi everyone, I have a question about my job search. Right now, I'm torn between two jobs. One is a support position for an academic institution. The other is a software engineering role for a tech startup. I was interviewing at both. I have an offer in hand from the academic institution, but we are negotiating money right now, as the salary was a bit low for the cost of living in the area. I emailed the tech startup about this offer and told them they wanted an answer by the end of the week. He responded with basically "We won't have an answer by the end of the week since we are still interviewing people but if something goes awry with your offer, let us know and we'll put you into the next round of interviews. You were a top candidate." I was also told that the 2nd interview would be to talk salary, stock, etc at the startup.
What do I do? The software engineering job is more of the path that I see for myself in the future and has more room for growth. However, it is not a definite job offer, unlike the academic institution. The hardest part is getting your foot in the door. What do you recommend I do? I really want the software engineering job, but there's no use throwing away a real opportunity for something that might happen.
