How do I explain an employment gap due to childcare without informing potential employers about my parental status?
I have an employment gap in my resume, a full year. I left my job last Oct for reasons, then we thought our family would be relocating out of state due to my partner's new employment and I was supposed to be getting job placement assistance when we got there. Well covid hit, the move never happened, and I conveniently stayed home with my children while they were out of school for most of the year. I am now getting back into the employment market and am struggling with my narrative.
I'm no fool, and you won't be able to convince me otherwise, that a potential employer knowing you have children/childcare responsibilities is no good for first impressions. (There is a reason it is illegal to ask; US based btw.) Especially as a woman. So how do I explain my employment gap without disclosing that information? Anyone have any experience dealing with this before?
