I have been on the BoD for an organization since we became a 501c3 three years ago, and previous to that spent six years running it. Every aspect, myself and a team. We have a track record I'm proud of. It's political, but it's functionally a literacy program (I am watering it down a lot, I don't love calling it that but that's how it reads).
I want to apply for a editorial assistant position at a pretty cool publisher who actively looks for non-traditional applicants (not just the EEO bullshit bylines). I have been regularly checking their careers site hoping for one to open up. But my proper paid work history is so bad looking. They also regularly donate to my organization, but HR may not know that and it also feels weird to say so (but I will).
I had a 'proper' office job, and currently do (have for six months) but the rest is service work - worked at music venues, janitorial work, low level healthcare. References are a mess because three employers no longer exist (buyouts led to closures). I have four years of college but no degree because of pre-req nonsense and then work taking over before I could finish - survival took precedent.
I genuinely want to work for them, and kind of specifically them and maybe a couple other imprints. I'm not sure how to present my, frankly, pretty prole-y jobs alongside what amounts to a lot of unpaid work at an org where nobody takes a salary. I love literature, I love their books (I actually do read what they print), I want to help put it out into the world, and while this post is horribly edited I can put my proper-language hat on. but I just feel stuck.
