This Craigslist Job Listing Was a Hoax?

I applied for a job I saw on craigslist a couple weeks ago, I looked again today and saw the posting was gone. Since I didn't hear anything, I thought I would follow up, so I emailed the employer and he responded to me saying the listing was hoax and that they did not post any employment opportunities. So what did I apply to? The application was on homebase, which I have used before, so it wasn't anything weird.
