So I accepted an offer about a week ago. They had set my start date in about 2 weeks.
The letter contained language saying - “contingent on a background check” ... I completed the paperwork last week and did the fingerprints. I don’t anticipate this being an issue, as I’ve never been fired nor do I have any sort of criminal history.
However, I was uncomfortable dropping my 2 weeks notice until I knew for certain the background check was complete. Anecdotally, I have heard some friends actually have offers pulled because a company couldn’t complete a background check (not pulled for being a criminal or lying - pulled for simply being unable to contact a reference). I asked the employer if we could push back the start date a week or so in order to give my employer proper notice and wait for background check completion. The HR did not respond to me today and I’m concerned that my offer will be pulled.
Note: I did not negotiate salary during the offer period. The original offer was solid for me.
Am I going to lose the offer?? Has anyone had a company pull an offer because of something similar? I felt it would have been an awful idea to drop notice without assurance that I could start at the new company.
