managing expectations in application/interview process

Am in the process of leaving my current field (where I’ve been employed at the same company for the last 25 years) for something very different. To say my job hunting skills are rusty would be an drastic understatement. I feel competent using online tools to apply for jobs in my new target field (clerical support in a medical office) but I don’t know how to judge if I’m getting any serious interest back or if I’ve just been shouting into the wind.

My applications so far have been mostly met with online assessment testing. Results that I’ve seen put me in the top tiers of whatever was measured. One office had hired a candidate screening company, which presented a series of 4-5 screenings over a few days, as well as a timed, recorded video interview. I had the most hope from them, seeing as they sent me through so many hoops, but now it’s been a week and I haven’t had any further contact.

Is all this typical? What kind of timeline is usual post-assessment testing to hear whether you’ve made it to the next round? At what point should I expect to hear from an actual person instead of an email or text message asking me to complete the next round of assessments? If all I’m doing is assessment testing, how am I supposed to follow up?

thanks for any advice you can share to help me learn to navigate this process
