For context, I am 22F. I paid my way through community college and have always planned to work full time with a company that does tuition reimbursement while I work towards my bachelor's degree. My company has taken a financial hit with the pandemic and there has been a lot of layoffs this year.
I just graduated in May with my A.S. in manufacturing technology. I have been working at an aerospace company as a machine operator for about 7 months and I really love it. They have a great plan in place for me to work as a machinist while I work towards my B.S. in mechanical engineering. Once I have my degree, they will promote me to engineer. I'm currently taking classes towards my bachelor's.
One of the main reasons I took this job was for their excellent tuition reimbursement program. Unfortunately, with tough times in the aeronautics industry, they have put the tuition reimbursement program on hold to cut costs until profit picks back up (hopefully in 2021, but not likely until 2022). This has led me to search for new opportunities so that I can get tuition reimbursement wherever I am working.
I interviewed and just received a job offer at a firearm manufacturing company (super profitable industry right now). The job function is similar to what I'm doing now. They are offering me $.80 more than what I'm making now, plus tuition reimbursement. I am contemplating what to do next because I really want to stay with my current company. I love it here because they have a great career plan for me, my boss and coworkers are great, there are benefits like an in-house gym and nice landscaping, and a good amount of PTO. They are also flexible with scheduling around my class schedule and other personal endeavors.
How can I use this offer to leverage myself at my current company so I can get my tuition reimbursed? I want to have a conversation with my boss, but I don't want him to think I'll leave, or that I'm being selfish since there were a lot of layoffs this year. Even if they still couldn't reimburse my tuition, I probably would stay because I feel like this company is so great to work for. I just want to ask him and try to leverage my new offer without scaring him off and sending me on my way.
