Can jobs find out past employment through background checks?

I just got a job at a restaurant, and I definetly extended the date of my first job to make my resume look better (yes I know this is irresponsible and something you shouldn’t do). Do restaurants and such do simple background checks like criminal history? Do they usually check before or after the hiring process?
