Sorry for the long text, bare with me.
Background: I am 32 years old, just had my first kid a couple months ago. I don’t have a college degree. I do in home sales where I meet home owners and offer/sell construction remodels. i have been in this industry for about 8 years. I am currently 100% commission. I make between $120-$180k/year. The last 3 years I have consistently done $170k-$180k. I work pretty much all day. Emails 6-8am, meet clients 9-3pm, come home and answer emails and do proposals on and off 4-8pm. My company is pretty good, I can pretty much do whatever I want with days off as long as it’s in advanced, they are understanding with life changing moments, offer all benefits including 401k
During the pandemic I couldn’t work from March-may. Came back in May but had terrible sales until this month. So I have been earning about half of what I normally would. The pandemic scared the shit out of me. What if something similar happens again? What if the economy crashes? Ill be fucked. Honestly, I hate going into peoples homes to sell. I hate having to crawl through attics and basements. I do not want to do this in my late 40s or 50s.
I’m looking at job offers to be a regional manager for a lot of companies that offer the products I sell (imagine Toyota car salesmen working for the the people making the engine). They are huge billion dollar (most of them) corporations that can withstand issues like corona. They would pay salary so i never have to worry about not being paid. Problem is, most of them max out around $100k-$120k. They would be more responsibility, something I have never done before and I’m not sure if I’ll be good at it the way I am in my current roll.
Am I crazy for leaving $180k (or potentially higher) paying job, with not too much stress for a $120k job with more responsibilities and stress. Knowing that the lower paying job offers stability and I can possibly climb higher in the company. Realistically even if I do climb up, I won’t crack $200k until I’m around 40-45 probably.
