I work on a recruiting team at fairly young start up. Yesterday during a team meeting we were discussing using a service that outsources sourcers from a country in Asia, long story short one of my teammates made a comment about how they probably use children and then another coworker chimed in that they’re probably peeling shrimp by day and sourcing by night.
Many teammates on the call had a visceral reaction to the comments and many people felt uncomfortable and shared to our manager (who didn’t shut down the comments in the moment) concerns afterward. I’m from the country we were talking about and was really shocked about the comment and didn’t know how to react.
Later in a 1-1 I got pretty emotional because it truly made me feel concerned and uncomfortable that anyone on the our HR (recruiting is under hr) team would ever be ok with saying those things in a professional setting and as HR professionals. I felt really anxious all day yesterday thinking about how I would have to share a space with them moving forward. They later apologized to me.
Today we learned that those two coworkers were fired. This is honestly my first time having this sort of work conflict and I feel a mixture of guilt (even though I didn’t do anything, they did) and relief.
Has anyone had experience in an office setting where a coworker was let go due to an unsavory joke?
