Telling Manager I’m Moving- and want to work remotely

Hello!

I work for a big tech company in San Francisco. We are working remotely until July 2021. I’m also fairly mid-level- not quite manager level yet. Have been with the company for 2 years in Feb.

My current manager is actually based in NYC, a city I’ve always wanted to live in. I had a friend pass recently, and it’s taught me to live my life to the fullest- and that means following my dream to move to NYC. We have a big office in New York, and my manager is based out there anyway, and we are working remotely until 2021, but I’d still love some advice on how to approach this conversation if you’re feeling so generous.

Another factor: I have been extremely depressed and unfocused as a result of my friend’s passing. Kind of slacking off. My manager called me on it on Friday, with a pep talk: “I need you to step up, because I know you can. You are a talented person.” I’m thinking this might have a negative effect on what I want to ask (haha), even though she is NYC-based.

I’m going on and on, but would love your advice!
