I recently left a high-paying, but soul crushing, corporate job to move with my boyfriend to a different state for him to attend grad school. I decided to use this opportunity to explore a new career path as I hated my prior corporate career... Currently, I am studying for my real estate license and hoping to get a position with a broker once I’m licensed; however, that can take up to 6 months to do, PLUS new realtors may not get a commission for months after starting. In the meantime, I’m looking for a retail position to pay the bills.
I have an interview with a jewelry store this week. I really like the idea of this job as it is an environment I think I would like and the pay is higher than most other retail positions, (plus there’s commission). However...I have a few things I would like advice on...
Firstly, how open should I be about my pursuits in real estate? I fully expect that I would keep this job (assuming I get it) at least part time for a while - possibly a year or more - while I’m getting my license and getting established in real estate. I’d like to be open about my plan, but I don’t want to screw myself out of the job in the interview by indicating I’m not planning to retire from the mall jewelry store...
Second, my last job was a corporate managerial position and pretty high-paid... I fully anticipated taking a huge pay cut when I left, at least until I could get established and experienced in a new field, so I don’t want to be ruled out of these positions before I even get started. I like the idea of retail because of the flexibility - I think it would be ideal to do in conjunction with my studying/exam/etc. but I worry that I will be ruled out based on my experience without even getting the chance to interview. Any thoughts about how to mitigate this? I thought about adjusting my resume to only show related experience, but then it will look like I haven’t had a job in 8 years... LOL
