My dad is in the ICU with stage IV lung cancer and the situation is uncertain, how long is appropriate to take off from work?

I currently work in tax consulting for big 4. I found out in July that my dad was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer and it took a turn for the worse these past couple weeks as he’s currently in the ICU. I’m back home right now and I took “off” this past week (despite still charging ~15 hours) since it’s just been a lot even though I can’t do much besides help out around the house since I can barely visit him due to COVID. While his future outlook isn’t great, the plan is for him to eventually be able to come home.

With that said, what’s a reasonable amount of time to take off from work? Fortunately my team is understanding so there’s no real pressure, but the situation is uncertain so it’s hard to say and I don’t want to jeopardize my career (since he didn’t want his situation to impact it from the start). I do want to make sure I can fully take off if he’s able to eventually make it home. Any thoughts?
