How to go about covering protest movements?

I'm looking for general tips to get involved with covering protests as a journalist. Did a sort of mini interview asking a friend in Thailand for their perspective on the situation out there. Generally find protests the most interesting and evocative area of politics and talking to my friend helped me realise that
