I've been job searching since the end of last month and I've applied to 20 paid positions as well as 10 volunteer positions so far. I've kept good track of what positions I have applied too for the past few weeks, aka Excel spreadsheet, but I may have forgotten about a few applications when I first started. I've mostly focused on where I live (a large city in Canada) and very specific job descriptions (research assistant, policy analyst, community worker). I have about 5 years of customer service experience, but don't have professional experience in the research or analysis area. I thought that my master's degree would make up for that, but clearly this has been overlooked or I am not emphasizing it enough, despite that being one of my bigger selling points as a candidate.
So far, I have heard absolutely nothing on the paid front. I've received no emails, no phone calls, no rejections. Just nothing. On the other hand, I've received 3 interviews for the volunteer positions. I did one volunteer interview, ace'd it and took the job, which is essentially casual counselling over the phone during the pandemic. There is a lot of remote work in volunteer organizations that I believe in, but I don't want to take on more than I can chew, considering the fact that I now volunteering and continuing my customer service job. I am starting to believe that my lack of experience in the research and analysis areas is starting to hold me back or I am somehow messing up my resume so as its lost to ATS? Maybe I just haven't applied to enough positions? Maybe I need to expand my horizons to include related occupations?
What are your suggestions to get more interviews? Any suggestions for resume drafting or skill building would be helpful!
