Hi all
Had a dream job interview yesterday - the last round in a series of four where I nailed the previous three interviews.
The interviewer asked me a technical question which I had not anticipated (thought it was going to be a more casual / behavioural / cultural fit interview). It threw me a little and while I answered it mostly well technically, I completely missed a really crucial point regarding the commerciality of my response (Legal role - commercial pragmatism is pretty crucial).
She implicitly suggested this in her follow up of outlining other things to consider. The tone changed and I became pretty distracted but held it together. Later in the interview I saw an opportunity to round back to my commerciality and indicated I believe I’m a commercial and practical lawyer and that my experience and opportunities I’ve been given in the past are a direct result of that reputation. It was a high level sell without much detail.
She responded that she can see I’m a commercial lawyer but it was hard to see if this was just casual assurance I should read positively or if It was a bit of a throwaway or pity comment. Being a bit frazzled I tend to read a lot into emotions but I would say my gut instinct tends to be pretty good. I’m stumped here though.
The rest of the interview went well, went to time and apart from the perceived shift in tone seemed to go well.
I’m wondering if I should address This in my follow up thank you and if so, how. Should I acknowledge we touched on commerciality and I’m happy to provide more clarity if required (to show examples in writing would result in a very long email)... or do I pretend it didn’t happen and send a standard thoughtful thank you? Or do I go in between and acknowledge I didn’t answer as well as I normally would and should have but that I believe my commerciality was demonstrted throughy CV and experience as well as through previous interviews?
Any thoughts appreciated!!
