Company is asking for my last 4 SSN to create an account with them

I was thinking of applying for a job at a hospital, and I was told I needed to make an account with them before I could apply. That seemed reasonable until I tried to make an account and noticed that it asked for my last 4 SSN just to make an account. Is this kind of thing normal?

I don't feel comfortable giving part of SSN just to make an account so I've been hesitating in applying for the job. I've thought of putting a fake number in, but the site states that the SSN I use when registering for an account needs to be the same as the number used in my job application.
