I have a condition / disability that affects the hours I can work. It used to be worse than it is now.
During a recent interview, I was asked why I left one of my previous jobs (not the most recent one). I just gave reasons why I wanted the new job, and mentioned some things that were a bit limiting about the old one. While those reasons were motivating, and while I was planning to leave, in reality I was let go before I had a chance--personally I considered it clear, based on some discussions, that my schedule wasn't working out. However the boss gave some other reasons.
I felt like I couldn't tell the interviewer, "I was laid off due to lack of work" since it wasn't really true (I also wasn't 100% sure what the old boss would say), and I felt like I couldn't say, "It's because of this disability I have that affects my schedule" because I hadn't disclosed it yet, I can't prove it, and it's accusatory.
At the end of the interview I disclosed my condition and the prospective employer seemed unfazed by it. However I felt too awkward about circling back to the above point, and the interview just ended.
I've since confirmed that the boss from the old job is happy to be my reference and approves of my skills, but if asked, he would say I was laid off due to lack of work.
I'm a bit paranoid that if I'm offered the job, they'll dig up this discrepancy, think I'm dishonest and rescind it or something.
Should I spontaneously bring this up before being offered anything? Or should I wait to see if I get the job, and then:
- Provide that boss as a reference and explain this?
- Provide that boss as a reference and not mention it?
- Skip that boss as a reference and not mention it?
Basically, I'm happy to explain, but don't want to needlessly volunteer unless it's likely to get dug up. I'm not sure how likely it is that they'd come across it, and even if they did, it seems to me like the natural outcome (if they were concerned) would just be to call me and I could explain.
