Gap Year On Resume Before Grad School

Long story short, expecting a lay off soon (10th week "unstaffed," or otherwise not working in a mid size consultancy). Despite my best efforts, my instruction from management has thus far been to "wait" to be staffed on an engagement. But I still collect a paycheck, and anticipate them to cut me loose soon, as this is unnaturally long for being unstaffed.

That being said, I'm a fresh Spring 2020 grad, looking to go to grad school in my field starting Fall 2021. IF I get laid off, and choose to just not have anything on my resume, is this suspicious? I have previous internships, but what do employers/grad schools think of a guy who didn't do anything for a year between grad school and undergrad?

Do people bat any eyes at this?

Is it a better "story" to describe yourself as having failed at job searches, versus taking time to decompress for a year before applying / self studying a few things alongside personal development goals?

Thanks!
