I was hired at an upscale bar about 2 months ago. I had about 6 months of serving experience when they hired me, so they weren’t comfortable starting me as a server right away. They said I would host for 1 month before serving.
Well I’m still not serving, I’m getting about 12 hours of work per week, and since I’m hosting I make minimum wage (+$1 hourly as my “tips”). That’s not enough money for anyone.
I have serving training shifts starting in 2 weeks but today I had an interview at a fancy country club as a server.
A 20% gratuity is included on the bill at the country club, and I would be getting between 30-40 hours a week. It is a tip pool system. I was told during my interview that servers typically make between $1400-$2000 weekly at this job.
But at my current job at the bar, it isn’t a tip pool system and once I start serving, I would only work 2 serving shifts a week and 2 host shifts. I really love management at the bar, but I feel like the money is too good at the country club to pass up the opportunity.
I cannot balance both jobs.
Also to add, the country club is seasonal, so I would only work there until mid-October. If I stayed at the bar, I would quit in December (I am going to medical school in January and cannot balance a job and med school).
Should I quit the bar if I get an offer at the country club? And since I haven’t been working at the bar for 3 months, do I have to give notice? (I feel like regardless of how I quit I’ll burn a bridge).
