Proper etiquette for applying to internal roles?

I’ve been at my company for a a little over a year and I hate my current role. I got an email last week from a company club that I am part of regarding an open role that honestly sounds like my dream job.

The email stated to reach out to the recruiter if you are interested. I applied internally and emailed the recruiter, but got an auto-reply that she is on PTO for the next 2 weeks. The application also listed the hiring manager so I reached out to him as well to express my interest and try to set up some time to discuss further.

I have not yet told my director and was wondering if I should? I have a good relationship with him but our org is currently in a very bad spot so I am a bit hesitant to tell him. We are (were I guess) a small team of 8 people and 3 people have jumped ship in the last 2 months, one of them quit on the spot. My managers a pretty nice guy, but when it comes to business and corporate competency he is a complete mess and he is the reason why 3 people quit and why I am currently miserable.

I don’t want to tell my boss that I’m looking for a new job, but I am concerned that the recruiter or new hiring manager might reach out to him. How would you suggest navigating this situation?

Edit: Also my boss is on PTO until next week so I won’t even be able to tell him until the following week.
