Quitting a job I just started

For a bit of background information: I’m 19 and I just finished my first year of university. About halfway through the year I decided to take a gap year and move in with my girlfriend and her parents because I didn’t wanna move back home four hours away. I knew that she had troubles with her parents but whenever I was there the environment didn’t seem too bad. I decided to get a part-time job to help pay for my rent living there. I got hired for a grocery store that was opening down the street from her house but I didn’t actually get to start working until a few weeks ago because the construction on the store was delayed.

I had to move in early due to Covid, however it completely fell apart because I soon realized how toxic her parents are. We ended up having to move in with my parents (before the job started) and now my gf and I are camping with my parents in their trailer until we move into our own apartment September 1st (can’t live with my parents permanently because of my gf’s job and other circumstances).

Current situation: So because of the the above circumstances my apartment is not in close proximity to the store like my gf’s parents house was. Our apartment is about an hour and half commute by bus to the grocery store I’m working in. At first I was completely fine with that because you gotta do what you gotta do. However, since starting my job a few weeks ago I’ve been thinking of finding a new job closer and quitting.

I tried to speak with my manager about possibly not working nights because the store closes at 10 and it’s an hour and a half commute back to my apartment. I don’t feel safe taking public transport at night and any other mode of transportation is too expensive. I explained my circumstances and how I didn’t know that this was gonna happen (my gf’s fallout with her parents).

My manager was completely rude about the entire situation and didn’t allow me any leeway. She basically said that it’s mandatory for workers to work two night shifts a week and there would be no exceptions. On top of that, she told me that Uber exists and there should be no reason for why I can’t work nights. Taking Uber twice a week from my apartment would take up 1/4 of my salary which is ridiculous. However, when I spoke to the assistant manager he said that there are employees who only work mornings.

I’ve only been training for two weeks now and I don’t start in the new store for another two weeks. I don’t want to be unprofessional and leave them without an employee right when the store opens. But I’m also so upset about the situation as it is (with my living situation falling out from under me) and really can’t work nights. I’m available seven days a week basically all day until 7 and this still is “unacceptable” in her words.

Should I start looking for a job with more day hours closer to me?
