Is following up a good idea when applying?

Been in the job search for about 6 months now and applied to near 100 jobs. I'm 25 and looking in business and marketing, and I seldom follow-up with the companies I apply with (unless they contact me first). Is this is a bad thing or normal? I see the classic "we'll contact you if chosen" or "please don't respond", but I'm wondering if it makes me outstanding or even reminds them that I exist if I were to follow-up. I'm not even sure where to begin to be honest. Perhaps finding the HR leads email or the respective department's head? Could use some guidance. Thanks all.
