Bombed a technical interview, looking to learn from it

I've had interviews before, but never had one just about technical skills, and it did not go the way I envisioned.

It started off with a SQL skills test, where they showed me three example tables. I then was asked to either write SQL queries in notepad, or dictate them for one of the interviewers to type. I chose the second option, since I thought it would be easier to speak it out than type it with two people watching.

This was the wrong choice. I use a visual query builder at work and as it turns out that's very different from verbally tell someone how to write SQL code. It didn't take long to get in my own head and for my anxiety to take over, and to totally bomb. I think the rest of the interview went well, but it deflated my confidence too hard to recover. This was easily the most painful interview I've ever done, made more so because they were asking me stuff that I do every day in my current role.

Obviously, I don't want to repeat this experience, so I have three questions: * Is it it normal to practice to write or dictate code in an interview? * What's the best way to prepare for that? * Is there a tactful way to reach back out? I can show the skills they asked for, and could show them, but I already feel like the ship has sailed.

Thanks for any help!
