Be honest, is it worth it going into the private sector as someone with a disability? And other advice?
I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life right now, I'm 28 years old with a mental disability (OCD). I'm managing it fairly well but I may need occasional accommodations at work, eg, maybe knowing about a few more things in advance, a bit of extra time to do some tasks (as I tend to obsess over my work a bit more than is healthy), maybe a little bit more unpaid leave than I would normally get to manage symptoms/stress. I've worked in retail, the family business, government, and graduated from a top 5 public university in the USA with a decent GPA (3.6). I'm trying to figure out where I should go for graduate school and what I should do for my career. My family wants me to do an MBA or law school, but I don't think I could handle the stress of either of those and I think I would be severely discriminated against in those possible careers because of my disability. They've also mentioned academia, but it seems very stressful, not particularly stable, and low paying, after seeing my friends do it and talking to my former professors.
I'm currently leaning towards doing an MPA and working for the government(state/local/federal) even if my overall salary may be lower because they seem to be more accommodating and less discriminatory(EG I don't have to wake up every day in fear that I may be fired/not promoted because of my disability, and I don't want to have to hide it for my entire life), and it interests me more than the other options, but I'm wondering if I should still consider giving the private sector a shot if it isn't as bad as I fear or should just focus on public sector employment. Do you guys, especially educated people with disabilities, have any input on what path I should choose?
