I work on a help desk. The company I work at keeps hiring more people so our call volume continues to increase. Every time we have an outage I am expected to stay late past my scheduled quitting time. Normally if I am needed to stay to help out my boss will chat me and ask if I can stay. I cannot recall ever saying no because usually I am not doing anything that I cannot stay. So today there was an outage (more people were available than there were calls in queue). I stayed an extra 20 mins past my quitting time and signed off once the call volume got to be more manageable but the outage wasn't fully resolved. My boss got mad and said I should ask before signing off during an outage just as a courtesy. Two things - it seems to be getting more and more often that we have high call volume right around my quitting time. They don't seem to want to hire another person so I feel like I've got to draw a boundary. Second - isn't that on them to ask me if I can stay late not the other way around? I get paid OT for it too so it isn't like I'm doing it for free. Today I signed off because I had my sister and niece coming over to eat. I didn't say that because I feel like it's an excuse but this just sort of just rubbed me the wrong way.
P.S. - it's a good job with good benefits and pay and I do not want to quit.
