Should presentations be scripted or improvised?

I'm a university student currently looking for placement opportunities to do for a year.

One of the Assessment centres I attended asked of me to perform a 5 minute presentation on why they should hire me.

Unfortunately I did very poorly. Whenever I go to do a presentation, my voice begins to break, I start losing my ability to breathe properly and I easily forget what I want to say. Now I don't really lack confidence because in any one on one interviews or conversations I expertly answer to a professional standard. But whenever I must monologue I start to forget my lines.

My question is this; Should my presentations be scripted or should they be made on the spot?

The presentation I did for this assessment centre was very scripted, I practised what I wanted to say over and over however once I got on the stage, the anxiety got the better of me and I forgot what I wanted to say, more than once, resulting in an awkward pause in the presentation.

Maybe if I did the presentation more casually with just the themes I wanted to talk about it would have been better?

I'd like to hear some responses to this, Thank you!
