Hey reddit, I need help! I have a family member who cannot read or write who needs come career suggestions.
When he was an infant in the mid 70’s, he quickly came down with a very serious upper respiratory infection that left him unable to breathe. He was rushed to the hospital and revived, but he went without oxygen long enough to cause some mental deficits.
Essentially, he cannot read, write, and has some social anxiety. His mental status is roughly that of a 10-12 year old. He has no filter and is curious about everything. He can read simple sight words and write his name. Due to his social anxiety, he gets flustered very easily.
Why is he not on disability? The high school he attended gave him a real diploma because he never missed a day of school all 4 years (welcome to the rural early 90’s south). He was enrolled in what he calls “the slow kids classes” but enjoyed every minute of it. Because he received a legitimate high school diploma, our family lawyer says the likelihood of getting him on disability is very slim.
He previously worked for our family’s dairy farm, but I’m sure most of you have seen the current state of the US dairy industry. I am hoping to get some companies and/or position suggestions to start looking for him.
