Quick Background: I'm an accounting student graduating this May, and currently work as a credit union teller part-time for about 6 months now, plus coding instructor at a learning centre (now online). I value helping people and have experience running volunteering roles analyzing data for animal shelters to established financial literacy programs for at-risk youth. In addition, I've interned at not-for-profit, private and public companies throughout my 5 years. Plus run a really small dog walking service business (currently on pause due to the crisis).
Short-Term Goal: Graduate and get a full-time role in accounting at a public company due to higher pay
Mid-Term Goal: Gain my CPA designation and run a profitable pet service business
Situation: I got the opportunity to meet a small grocery franchise owner that she started 4 months ago (graduated in accounting with 8 years of accounting corporate experience) at the credit union, who needed a Junior Accountant.
During the interview/tour: Owner vents that the business needs help on the accounting side to understand where the business stands financially, especially doing it all by herself plus one truck driver. How she's running at a loss, and opened a second mortgage to finance this franchise that lacks support from head office.
I guess the venting made me want to run away like is this what running a small business 4 months in is?
Offer: It's a contract 5-6 months hourly wage similar to credit union. The pay is $5 lower than what I make at the credit union, but it'll be 40 hours instead of less than 30 hours. No benefits. I won't just be a junior accountant who will understand the full accounting cycle, but also be operations helping out with driver's routes for the day to answering calls for orders, essentially be the second hand.
I guess my dilemma is that right now despite being a bank teller, I'm working for a large company that provides benefits despite being part-time and hourly, especially at this time of crisis.
Any advice?
